Despite being incredibly hard, diamonds are brittle, and every so often, a setter (or a jeweller) chips one. Sometimes it’s no problem, like when the stone is only small, and can be replaced with another from the parcel of hundreds of melee. Other times it’s a total headache…

To complement the quality diamonds that we sell, we also sell a range of engagement rings, as well as diamond ear studs. For years, we have been hand-making our rings in our Perth workshop, however, due to demand, we will soon we will begin offering cast engagement rings at a lower price.

Judging by classified ads like those in The Trading Post, there are always people selling diamond engagement rings. The most common cause is that the engagement or wedding was called off, leaving the would-be bride or groom with an expensive ring, along with all the emotional baggage attached to the ring.

On Monday, we received our first square hearts and arrows cut diamond. It’s just under a carat (0.87ct) and an F/VS1, with excellent polish and symmetry, as graded by the GIA.

With larger overseas labs such a the GIA taking the lion’s share of the certified diamond market, it can be hard for smaller or localised labs to compete. However, there are a number of small labs, including those in Australia that do an excellent job of certification, yet are ignored by consumers and the trade alike.
