As you may or may not be aware, every diamond bought from Jogia Diamonds is analysed in our cut lab, so the quality of the diamond you buy is guaranteed. The main benefit of buying a diamond like this is that instead of bright lights and biased opinions found in a typical retail environment, there is some scientific theory behind what we are selling you.
There are three main ways that we analyse cut:
- Through the Ideal-Scope.
- Through proportion analysis and lab cut grades.
- Through the use of software prediction.
Each of these methods has an entirely different scientific theory behind it – that is, a stone that looks good under the Ideal-Scope may not perform so well under software prediction, and vice-versa. Similarly, not everyone agrees with the scientific theory behind these methods. For example, it is not uncommon for jewellers or diamond merchants to favour proportion analysis and lab grades over the Ideal-Scope.
So, what is scientific theory? Well Wikipedia defines it as:
A mathematical description, a logical explanation, a verified hypothesis, or a proven model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation.
Therefore scientific theory is not fact, as it is open to verification or falsification at any time.
Much like cut analysis, global warming is a hotly debated scientific theory. The popular theory is that humans’ carbon dioxide emissions are causing the earth to heat up. However, in a recent documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle a group of scientists theorise that humans’ carbon dioxide emissions have little effect on global warming. Instead, they theorise that global warming is caused by natural events such as volcanos, temperature cycles and the earth’s position in relation to the sun.
Unfortunately, all this scientific theory leaves us with no proven cause of global warming. What we do know however is that the earth’s temperature is rising.
So, how does global warming relate to cut? Well, from all the analysis presented to you it is important to realise that each method has a different scientific theory behind it. If all these theories agree, then they will likely be accurate. If they don’t, then further investigation is required.
In the end however, it is much better to get your diamond scientifically analysed than to buy based on the opinion of the seller.
