{"id":48,"date":"2007-07-23T12:13:53","date_gmt":"2007-07-23T03:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.diamondsandopals.com\/blog\/why-we-dont-sell-argyle-diamonds\/"},"modified":"2021-07-25T16:00:50","modified_gmt":"2021-07-25T08:00:50","slug":"why-we-dont-sell-argyle-diamonds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jogiadiamonds.com.au\/blog\/why-we-dont-sell-argyle-diamonds\/","title":{"rendered":"Why We Don\u2019t Sell Argyle Diamonds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A common question that we get asked is &#8220;Do you sell Argyle diamonds?&#8221;.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Because we&#8217;re in Perth (the capital city of Western Australia) and Argyle&#8217;s head office is in Perth as well, with the mine located in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avalook.com\/wa\/kimberly.htm\">the Kimberley<\/a>, people assume and even think it&#8217;s logical that we should sell diamonds from the Argyle diamond mine.<\/p>\n<p>However, what a lot of people don&#8217;t know is that 95% of diamonds that come from the Argyle mine aren&#8217;t gem quality, meaning that colourless to near colourless white diamonds from Argyle are very rare.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Argyle Diamond Characteristics\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jogiadiamonds.com.au\/images\/argylediamonds.jpg\" alt=\"Argyle Diamond Characteristics\" width=\"427\" height=\"555\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>Characteristics of Argyle diamonds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of those white diamonds that are of gem quality, they usually have the following characteristics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Blue or green fluorescence.<\/li>\n<li>Graphite inclusions &#8211; inclusions that are black and easier to see with the naked eye.<\/li>\n<li>Twinning wisp inclusions, as shown below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Diamond with Twinning Wisps\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jogiadiamonds.com.au\/images\/analysis\/SS1676.jpg\" alt=\"Diamond with Twinning Wisps\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>\u00a0A diamond with heavy twinning wisp inclusions. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>This means that\u00a0someone wanting a\u00a0diamond with\u00a0a colour F and a clarity VS2 (a fairly common colour\/clarity combination that we sell)\u00a0with no fluorescence from the Argyle mine may be out of luck.<\/p>\n<p>That said,\u00a0there\u00a0does exist demand for\u00a0jewellery with a distinct Australian theme.\u00a0One way to make an &#8220;Australian themed&#8221; engagement ring would be to use pink\u00a0diamonds from the Argyle mine as shoulder diamonds, along with gold sourced from\u00a0one of the many gold mines in Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Pink Diamond Ring\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jogiadiamonds.com.au\/images\/engagement_rings\/ER62-2.jpg\" alt=\"Pink Diamond Ring\" width=\"248\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jogiadiamonds.com.au\/engagement_rings\/four-prong-diamond-engagement-ring-with-five-shoulder-stones-each-side-ER62\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pink diamond ring <\/a>with Argyle pink diamonds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">That said, it is important to remember that whilst the raw material comes from the Argyle mine, <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Australia has no diamond cutting facilities<\/span> Rio Tinto only has limited cutting facilities in Perth.
