Launched in 2005, ADGL was owned by diamond wholesaler Bolton Gems. In July 2006 the laboratory was sold to Bolton Gems chief diamond grader Mike Muller who is no longer employed by the wholesaler. The laboratory employs the latest equipment and grades to Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) standards.

According to their website, ADGL is for the diamond trade only, not consumers. This means that if a member of the public would like a diamond graded by ADGL they would need to first take it to a jewellery retailer who would act as an intermediary. This is rather like a member of the public not being able to buy directly from a jewellery wholesaler
